Bad creative briefs hurt everyone involved

Long creative briefs can waste time and confuse people. They are more important for projects with many stakeholders and big teams. But what about all those small projects?

There are many challenges of coordinating content between raw ideas, shooters, editors. Time is precious. Even small productions can explode in cost. Good creative briefs take a lot of time and work to get just right. And some projects can't invest in that time, so they are left with either a Bad Brief, or a roll of the dice. That can be even worse, because the results might not meet baseline expectations! Or might go down a rabbit hole in the wrong direction, exploding cost to recover.

There has to be a better way!

Effective creative teamwork is all about establishing a trustworthy process. Rigid specs kill downstream innovation. Creators needs flexibilty to do the best work. So what is the right trade off?

Sometimes its not a creative brief as an 8 page document describing everything. But a rough outline and an iterative cycle. This is especially true when many factors remain unknown, and you don't have the budget to shape the work. You work on the production with what you've got.

This approach works well for brands that know what they want. They know their look, feel and talk. Which means they can effectively guide the creative process -if its feasible to loop them in at key moments of an evaluation cycle.

It's particularly effective for higher volumes.

This storyboard can be reviewed live be a remote client in another country. Often it is reviewed end of day, or mid shoot, to evaluate coverage.

When I say "storyboard" I want to emphasize how a brand can define a shot list for a remote shooter / crew / social team / agency, and then gracefully transition to ordered sequence of video clips, under review of a creative director. The storyboard is live and dynamic, allowing for automatic animatics, supporting social posts, facilitating location scouting, better assessment of coverage, and final asset storage. We built our first product with primary goal of SPEED and TIME EFFICIENCY, while respecting the creative process.

A creative director may sit either on the brand side or the agency side.

Here is an example from the above documentary, where the shot “Getting on the sailboat” has three different takes. All are backed up in their original format in the cloud. Yet it is easy to review proxy files (streaming low resolution video), allowing the storyboard owner to select the best take, without a bottleneck with a downstream editor. All takes are backed up in the cloud; it is quick and easy for the storyboard owner to make a selection. Easy to export for social, or to hand off an automatically generated line edit, to save an editor time in post production.
